There were 116 bowlers who saluted the event and what a great day it was.
Barry Dean, vice president of the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, officially handed the club over to Zone 8 president Charles Fisher who recited The Ode and then it was out on the greens.
The army outnumbered the navy and air force so the army "loaned" some grunts and all was squared away.
Bar staff were kept quite busy, and with some extra giveaways for first touchers from leads, seconds and skips on the three greens, there was fairly strong responses.
Chow time arrived and all players and workers were served a meal of chicken, prawns, salad and bread rolls.
The response from most bowlers was "great tucker".
Port City president Paul Brady, holding the rank of army major, was called upon to reflect on the day, and provided a very much tongue in cheek response to the day and the fact it leads into Anzac Day, which was well received by the bowlers.
As this is a very social day the other services were given a bit of a sharp tongue, but as was said all in good fun. Winners were then given their rewards and they were J Lazarevich, R Baldwin, J O'Mally, J Turner, the wine merchants again, N Wright, C Hayes, T Merchant, S Allan, J Hamstead and D Handsaker.
The shield we play for every year was won by the Army on 248 points, followed by Navy on 232 and Air Force on 209 points.
Raffles were run and 25 lucky winners took home some great meat trays.
To Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, in particular bowls co-ordinator Rex Johnston for his setting up the tables with RSL logos and arranging the food, we thank him very much. As usual the greens staff who have had some problems with one green but managed to get the three greens ready for us, a big thank you and finally the bar staff and the Tuncurry Beach bowlers John Fletcher and Steve Holohan who helped with the serving of the meals we thank you all.
To our tireless ladies auxiliary, once again our thanks.
Coming events include: April 24 entries close social and RSL fours championships; May 5 is Bill Ross day triples North Haven BC; May 7 start of fours championships, RSL and social, various bowling clubs.
