Taree’s Bushland Drive track had been out of action for 15 long months while a $2.01 million State government sponsored redevelopment of the course was completed.
This was the first meeting at Taree since January 4 1991. In that time Taree Race Club led a nomadic life, racing at Wingham, Port Macquarie and even Kempsey. Taree Race Club secretary Tony Cox admitted before the meeting that getting punters back to the track would be the immediate challenge.
“Fifteen months is a long time and I suppose they’ve made other arrangements with Pub and Club TAB,’’ he told the Times.
Mr Cox added that it was hard for the laymen to see where the development money had been spent as nothing much seemed to have changed with the layout.
“But the main benefit is having a well drained, all weather course proper and associated training tracks,’’ he said.
“We also have a computerised irrigation system.’’
More than 3000 people packed into the track for the meeting.
