Event organiser Danielle Old said the final numbers are still coming in, but they expect the event will result in more than 250 people being a bit warmer this year.
“This event has been held nationally for nine years and locally for the past three. It is always well supported by the community, with squares beginning to be sent in from as early as March,” Danielle said.
Greater Taree City Libraries are the meeting place for several knitting groups throughout the region and the annual Knit-In is supported by all of them.
“There are 17 members of the Harrington knitting group and they meet twice per week.
“In Taree the group is so successful they have increased their meetings to once per fortnight. It is a great way to meet people and connect with the community,” Danielle said.
This year’s Knit-In featured a ‘wrap race’ which involved teams of four, with 28 squares each, vying to stitch together the fastest wrap. “It was a fun way to use left-over squares. Everyone had a great time. Local high school students also participated which was great to see,” Danielle said.
All wraps made are sent to an organisation called ‘Wrap with Love’ which distributes them to communities in Australia and throughout the world.
So far, nine years of knitting has resulted in the creation and distribution of more than 47,000 wraps for those in need. Organisers hope this year will bring that total up to 50,000.
“Judging by how successful our local Knit-In event has been, I am sure they will reach their national goal,” Danielle said.
