WHAT a relief for those members of the Wingham Services Bluewater Fishing Club to finally be able to get out and weigh in a few fish for the last outing of 2013.
Both the Bluewater and River, Rock and Estuary sections attracted 12 fishers including three women, with two vessels getting out to sea.
The Sunday Christmas party was combined with the weigh-in and there was a large gathering including several new members and a handful of little ones who eagerly waited the arrival of Santa Claus.
Unfortunately Santa wasn't able to bring along any of his elves this year but hoped that next year they wouldn't be so busy and he could bring some with him.
Many thanks were extended by president Jack Muxlow to all members including 'Captain Cook' Derek who cooked up a storm as always but supplemented the usual sausages, rissoles and steaks with some tasty hot dogs. The ladies of the committee assisted by helpers, organised salads and a few special treats seeing it was coming up to Christmas, and these were much appreciated.
Forty-eight members and guests gathered at the Wingham Rifle Club, which was decorated for Christmas, and after lunch Santa Claus popped in to say hello to all and give out little buckets of lollies and an ice cream to the youngsters and some not so young ones.
It was great to see former Wingham resident Jim Andrews, now living in the Newcastle region join the members. Jim had been in town to attend the Wingham Services Club fellowship dinner held the previous evening and was heading home later in the afternoon.
With Santa's departure it was time for the weigh master Les Rose and recorder Neil Miller to get down to the nitty gritty to see just who had come out a winner on the day.
Nine species were caught during the weekend including snapper, morwong, flathead, pig fish, leatherjacket, whiting, teraglin, nannygai and bream - a total of 49 fish that weighed in at 26 kgs.
Winner of the Bluewater Section went to long time member and keen fisherman Allan Vowles, who caught seven of the nine species weighed in whilst Judy Poynter took out the River Section and Dean Vowles won the Secret Species with his leather jacket - congratulations to all the winners together with Debbie Sullivan, a recent new club member who took out the vouchers.
President Jack thanked all for their support throughout the year, wished everyone a very happy Christmas and reminded them that the fifth weekend outing for December has been cancelled and that the next outing will be held Saturday/Sunday January 18-19, 2014.
The club hopes to see everyone with a bag full to weigh in.
