A GoFundMe page that was set up for survivor, Joe Hoffman, has reached nearly $70,000 with some assistance from McCarthy.
Mr Hoffman was attacked by a 3-metre great white shark at Crescent Head on NSW's Mid-North Coast earlier this year leaving him with extensive injuries to his arm.
He told Australian Community Media he was overwhelmed by the support he had received.
"It really humbled me, and I guess you know that any of your mates would do it for you, but I didn't realise how many people were thinking of me, it definitely pulled a lot of communities together," Mr Hoffman said.
He wanted to especially thank both the Byron Bay and Sunshine Coast communities, as well as the Mudjimba board riders and longboard club for rallying behind him.
Mr Hoffman was working on the set of the new Netflix series called God's Favourite Idiot, starring Melissa McCarthy, before the incident.
The Oscar-nominated actress and her director husband, Ben Falcone, donated $2000 towards his recovery efforts.
The GoFundMe campaign was started by Daniel Jamieson and Louisa Anderson to help with Joe's medical expenses and rehabilitation.
"We have been overwhelmed by the love and support that has flowed to us from both the Mudjimba and Byron Bay communities and across the globe since Joe's terrible injuries," Ms Anderson said.
"The surfing community has gathered around our family in what has been a difficult time, reaching out with best wishes and practical support.
"Thanks also to our extended family for the practical support that has been extended to us. Doctors, nurses and surgeons at John Hunter Hospital and Kempsey Police have also shown extraordinary kindness."
Mr Hoffman undergoes physiotherapy sessions daily in an effort to regain full control of his right hand.
