"Protect our home" is the message that students of the Environmental Group at St Clare's High School, Taree have practised and preached, earning them the Young Landcare Leadership Award for 2021.

While there is no ceremony due to COVID restrictions, the group will still go through to the State awards that will occur next year.
"This is an amazing honour, and I am very proud of the group and all the work they have put in this year. It wouldn't have been possible without their dedication and diligence," said student group leader, Finlay O'Connell.
The environmental group is a collection of students, teachers and parents from the St Clare's community who actively collaborate to ensure a sustainable future for all.
Since the group began, they have been involved in the development of projects such as:
- solar panels on the roof of the schools maths/HSIE block
- water tanks and pumps to catch and supply the grounds with a more sustainable source
- a vegetable garden
- working compost bins
- establishment of a stable colony of native Australian bees to assist in the pollination process of plant species in the gardens
- beautification of the street side of the hall with a variety of plants that will assist in reducing our carbon footprint.
"We have worked incredibly hard this year, organising events and initiatives both within the school and in the community, so it is wonderful to be recognised for these actions," Finlay said.
On Friday (September 10), the school will be hosting a school-wide Kahoot aimed at students, parents and teachers to fundraise for the Australian Youth Climate Coalition.
