The series of five workshops will cover collaboration opportunities across fields such as professional and administrative services; manufacturing, food technology and logistics; agriculture, environment, aquaculture, forestry and mining; health and social services; and tourism, events and creative industries.
Topics up for discussion include industry trends and the impact of these trends on learning and research, as well as suitable spaces across the region for work integrated learning.
"Utilising our UNE Taree University Centre, and with the support of local businesses, we could offer students work-integrated learning, whether an internship or placement, and so help them secure vital practical skills," UNE's director of regional development, Professor David Miron said.
"The Mid Coast has a large number of small and medium enterprises (SME) and the university is keen to engage directly with these business owners to learn more about their workforce and technological requirements."
Professor Miron said the workshops build on a similar, very successful, initiative that was rolled out in support of Tamworth's expansion agenda in 2020, and follow on from the successful launch of UNE's strategic plan, Future Fit, in Taree in May this year.
"The Mid Coast now has the same opportunity to share their needs and expectations with us.
"These discussions will determine whether UNE has existing courses that meet local industry needs or whether we should possibly explore new offerings, identify research collaborations, and discuss potential industry and community partnership models.
"Our discussions will also identify barriers to learning and, hopefully, potential solutions," Professor Miron said.
"UNE's association with Taree and surrounds spans over two decades. We are keen strengthen this relationship further by exploring mutual opportunities for innovation and growth," Professor Miron said.
The series of workshops will take place between August 30 and September 6. Once completed a consultative plan with be developed and shared with relevant stakeholders.
