The idea started when Margaret knitted an ear saver for her daughter who works in health care to improve the fit and comfort of wearing a face mask.
Margaret took to the Hallidays Point Facebook community page in July with the donation callout and was immediately bombarded by local businesses, hospitals and community members who wanted ear savers for their workers, friends and families.
"I initially made six (ear savers) for the girls at Manning Base (Hospital), but when the lockdown hit again I put a call to the Hallidays Point community page and next thing you know we have made 483 for people all over the place," Margaret said.
Margaret and Joan have about 18 polystyrene containers and about three bins full of wool that have been both purchased by the pair and donated by community members and organisations.
"It gives us something to do during lockdown, the look on some peoples faces when they put it on made us feel really good about what we are doing," Margaret said.
On Monday (August 23), the pair sent 30 ear savers to Port Macquarie Base Hospital maternity unit for health care workers and patients to use.
