I was disgusted to see a makeshift shack and a tent set up behind fig trees near the gate to the Botanical Gardens in Taree. Not only did it amaze me that there are people getting away with living there but I am shocked at the amount of rubbish that's is there.

There were a couple of shopping trolleys full of rubbish and the ground was littered with more.
Now, if I was to park my caravan in such a public area to stay even just one night I am sure council rangers would tell me to move on, and this is with no rubbish anywhere. These people are exploiting a "turn a bind eye" mentality. Council must be aware. They mow the area regularly.
One has to wonder where the occupants defecate (hopefully not in the river), let alone shower.
I know there are some who are forced out of homes for one reason or another but that doesn't give them the right to treat public spaces that way.
Imagine what visitors to our town would think when they see that sort of thing.
It's time council cleans up the place.
