We'd love to be able to help preserve and protect this as much as possible so that our grandchildren can experience it as well.
Legislation in our Federal Parliament to amend our federal nature laws, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act will see less of our natural systems survive in these difficult times of major environmental change due to land clearing, pollution, water shortages, global warming, mining etc.
The current bill to create National Environmental Standards and an Environmental Assurance Commissioner are not in line with the recommendations of the Independent Review of the EPBC Act by Professor Graeme Samuel. They will not deliver the environmental protections our nation needs to halt the extinction crisis. Species loss has been significant in Australia since European occupation began.
To get control and keep what we have we need strong, legally binding national environmental standards and a truly independent regulator to oversee decision making.
We know the Environment Minister has announced plans to develop new standards within two years of the legislation passing. Unfortunately, this is not good enough.
Guaranteed stronger standards are needed now.
What is required now is legislation that will implement the recommendations of the Samuel Review and actually protect nature.
So we ask you to please raise this with federal MP David Gillespie, the Federal Environment Minister and our senators.
