MidCoast Council says the reconstruction of this section of Wingham's main street will be undertaken in stages over a three month period, starting from Monday, June 7.
Council's director of infrastructure and engineering services, Rob Scott said the works will include reconstruction of the road pavement, realignment of kerb and gutter and some stormwater pipe installation over a 300 metre section of the street.
"Beginning on Monday, June 7, we'll be undertaking stormwater and kerb and gutter works along the length of the section," Mr Scott said.
"This initial work will take about three to four weeks to complete and require road shoulder closures where we are working. Through traffic movements and residential and business accesses will be maintained."
The overall road width will be reduced, allowing new kerb and guttering to be installed and existing gutter bridges removed, making it safer for pedestrians and for vehicles entering and exiting properties. It will also result in a widening of nature strips along both sides of the street.
The next stage of works will be undertaken between Dennes Street and Queen Street, including the Queen Street intersection. That section of road will be closed to through traffic for around four to five days, with detours in place to divert traffic. Resident access will be maintained.
The following two stages will involve closure of separate parts of Isabella Street between Queen and Primrose Streets. Sections of the road will be closed to through traffic for approximately 11 -13 days, with detours in place to divert traffic. Resident access, along with access to the Coles loading dock, will be maintained.
In the final stage, finishing works such as line marking and turfing will be completed, with no closures required.
This project complements works recently completed on two sections of Primrose Street and the current works at McCullagh Lane carpark.
Other works planned as part of the $100 million Road Upgrade package will include roadworks associated with the Wingham CBD masterplan such as the Isabella Street beautification and the Farquhar / Bent Streets intersection improvements.
