We responded to the call for help, immediately establishing Operation NSW Flood Assist, and marshalling Army, Navy and Air Force personnel from New South Wales and Queensland to help in the effort.
The first personnel on the scene were local Army reservists from 41st Royal New South Wales Regiment. They represent the best qualities of the ADF by willingly giving up their time and ensuring we were able to get on the ground quickly to help those in need. We are deeply appreciative of the support of these men and women, and of their employers.
Up to 850 soldiers, sailors and aircraft men and women have contributed to the operation, working closely with local councils and other NSW agencies to help residents and business owners clear up debris, open up roads and deliver food and other essential supplies.
I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the friendship and support our members have received, particularly given the hardship and losses many people here have faced.
We are proud to support Australians in need. We are ready to respond to the next call-for-help - although, here's hoping it won't be any time soon.
