The winner is trained by Pat Parrelli from North Rothbury and produced a brilliant finish to get the decision by a neck to Guided Soul (Jessica Savage) with Marton Blaze (David Samderson) third. Guided Soul started at $41 with Manton Blue $13. Guided Soul looked set to claim the cup until overhauled just on the line. The winning time was 31.44.
Ice Reina was sent out the $2.60 favourite but received a bump at the first turn of the 537 metre event and never recovered. Ice Reina finished sixth.
Tatum gained a place in the final by finishing fourth in the heat last Saturday, but Parrelli said he was reasonably confident of an improved showing in the race. Parrelli has been a regular at Taree meetings for many years, his association starting back when the track was situated near Taree Recreation Centre and known as 'Robbery Park'.
This was Tatum's fifth win and the second over the 537 metres at Taree.
Further details will appear in Friday's Manning River Times.
The cup is the richest ever race staged by the club, with overall prizemoney of $9500, $7000 going to the winner.
