We are all aware that the ubiquitous utes and SUV's dominate the Australian market today. But let's hop into our Delorean and head back through the years to see what has dominated in the dim glow of the past.

First of all back to 1982 - Ford's now dead Falcon wore the crown followed by Holden Commodore, the Mitsubishi Sigma and Ford Laser. Obviously most of the Sigmas and Lasers have departed for the great scrap yard in the sky. You do see the occasional Falcon and Commodore from the era.
1992 saw the Falcon remain top of the heap with the Commodore closing. The Mitsubishi Magna and Toyota Camry followed.
2002 saw Commodore in the lead followed by the Falcon and Toyota Corolla.
2012 and the goal posts are shifting. King of the heap is the Mazda3 followed by the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla. The Commodore staggered into 4th, the Falcon not even making the top 10.
How the domestic market has changed. 2020 saw Toyota's Hilux on top followed by the Ford Ranger and the Toyota RAV4. The Toyota Corolla was the first sedan in at number 4.
The buyers' tastes have changed. The days of the four door sedan maybe numbered (or will they make a comeback?). Like the USA we now love our big heavy 4WD utes, even though the great percentage never taste the dirt.
Me personally? I'll take a sedan any day, but I am old school.
