John Southon is the principal of Trundle Central School, a small school in the Parkes Shire in the Central West of NSW. John gained local, national and international media attention during the drought when he made impassioned pleas for people to visit and spend money in drought affected communities. His work in the area of youth mental health in rural areas led to a nomination for the 2021 Australian of the Year Award. In this comment piece, John shares his thoughts on an issue that touches the lives of everyone living in regional Australia.
