The Old Bar RSL Sub-branch executive is keeping a close eye on health restrictions in relation to Anzac Day events. No decisions have been made about any events yet, but a march is highly unlikely and a commemoration ceremony, if held, would have to be a restricted and controlled event. Members are keen to have some form of ceremony, recalling that the Remembrance Day event last year was very well supported. A public dawn service is also unlikely to occur. That hasn't stopped the sub-branch moving on with other commemoration projects. In collaboration with the Old Bar Men's Shed, 200 white wooden crosses are nearing completion. Then the Craft at Old Bar ladies are making 200 poppies to adorn the crosses so that a field of remembrance can be displayed. There will be more information on that later. The Old Bar Beach RSL Sub-branch will hold its annual general meeting this Thursday, February 18 at 6.45pm. Each AGM is critical as it is essential for the sub-branch to have an executive in place to continue operations. The sub-branch is seeking a new treasurer or secretary for the next year. So members, please be at the Old Bar Soldiers' Memorial by 1845hrs tomorrow. Good news coming from Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, and MidCoast Council. A total of $60,000 in State government funding is being provided to the council to carry out another sand scraping project on the Old Bar beach. (See MRT February 12). The last lot of sand scraping was commenced in October 2018 and followed up with more in January 2019. The result was wonderful and obviously provided significant mitigation to dune erosion. The president of Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group, Elaine Pearce, is delighted that this follow-up work is to be carried out. "It's great to have our State member and council on side, addressing a very important issue," Mrs Pearce said. "The beach at Old Bar is an important asset, not just to Old Bar residents, but to the much wider community also." Our workshop for today is knitting poppies for a Field of Remembrance to be created by our local Old Bar Beach RSL Sub-branch for Anzac Day. It is great to see these projects happening in our community. Craft at Old Bar meets on the first, third and fifth Wednesday of each month, school holidays excepted. Want to know more?
