Old Bar Sport and Recreation Committee
A milestone was reached at the recent annual general meeting of the Old Bar Sport and Recreation Committee when secretary/treasurer, Don Sheather stepped down following almost 20 years in the position. Like a few of the others still on the committee, he was an original member.

The position of secretary/treasurer has been taken on by Yvonne Nash of the Old Bar Cricket Club.
However, Don still retains his position as a committee member. He has been a tireless worker on the committee which has played such an important role in the development of sports infrastructure in the Old Bar area, the most recent being the netball courts and storage sheds at Old Bar Reserve and earlier, the amenities block at the EG Trad Oval.
Gary Dobinson, the long serving president and great team leader is another whose sterling work should be greatly appreciated by the community.
Other committee members are Peter Godfrey, Malcolm Ladmore, Warren Lambert, Mark Searles, Lisette de Gary, Chris Dempsey, Jack Scanes, Debbie Burns and Neil Cadden.
The group has enjoyed a positive working relationship with MidCoast Council and has received tremendous support from state Member for Myall Lakes, Mr Stephen Bromhead.
Old Bar Walking Group
Old Bar Walking Group celebrated Christmas lunch at the Old Bar Tavern, and recently the one year anniversary with breakfast at Flow Bar.
Sheryl Humphries and Gayle Dean started this group a year ago and many friendships have been made.
It has gathered members especially during the COVID months when both the exercise and the social contact helped members get through "iso".
Weather permitting, they walk most days but Tuesday is organised to meet and start beside Old Bar Gourmet Meats to walk Old Bar streets, bush tracks or beach (depending on the tides).
Thursdays they walk to Wallabi Point and back starting at the Men's Shed, Trad football ground.
All walks currently start at 7:30am and they usually include a coffee break. Other days members plan walks amongst themselves and advertise through a Messenger group.
Special walks have often been organised at Harrington, Wingham, Forster and Laurieton and occasionally they include breakfast or lunch.
New members are welcome, just turn up on Tuesdays or Thursdays and introduce yourself.
All levels of fitness are accepted (walking time usually 45 minutes to one hour) and you are able to shorten the distance walked or join a half hour group on Wednesday.
They took a break between Christmas and New Year and restarted on Tuesday January 5.
It is a great way to meet people and you can be shown areas around Old Bar you may have never seen.
Long Service recognised
Barry and Robyn Stevens have owned and operated the Old Bar Squash Centre for the past 40 years. That is a significant contribution to the squash playing population.
Neighbour, Elaine Pearce (of Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group fame) and friend, retired electrician Bob Galvin, thought that instead of handing out trophies or standing by while they are presented, the Stevens should themselves be awarded a trophy "for forty years of service to squash".
Elaine and Bob went ahead and purchased a suitably inscribed trophy and presented it to the couple in front of all those attending the Squash Centre's Christmas party.
RSL Sub-branch remembers widows
Old Bar Beach RSL Sub-branch remembers the widows of some of their departed comrades.
Some were able to attend the annual Christmas party, which they enjoyed immensely. Others, who are shut in or in a nursing home, were taken a gift of a voucher or hamper of toiletries and beauty products.
This is very much in tune with the philosophy of the RSL - looking after veterans and their families.
