Winner of the 2020 Manning River Times-Ken McDonald Memorial Sportstar of the Year will be announced in early 2021.
In recent years this has been conducted with Australia Day celebrations in Taree. However, council indicated these will be scaled down next January due to COVID-19 restrictions.
So the announcement of the sportstar of the year may be a bit more subdued. However, there will be a winner.
Generally speaking the sportstar of the year is judged on the performances of the winners of the weekly Times-Iguana award. This went into hiatus in March when Australia went into lockdown.
The award resumed in August, so obviously there won't be as many contenders for top honours. There's been little representative sport or State of national championships held this year, so that will also have an impact on the final decision.
But rest assured, there will be a sportstar of the year, COVID-19 or no COVID-19.
Test cricketer Johnny Martin was the first sportstar of the year. The award was on by golfer Quedesha Golledge in 2019.
