As befitting this stage of the championships, both of these finals were crackers, and results could have gone either way.
In the semi-finals of the opens Martin Gosper (Forster) defeated Matt Pearce (Harrington) 31-20, and in an all Taree Leagues match Warren Cocksedge defeated Bill Brett 31-12.
The final started with Gosper winning the first three ends to have an early 4-0 lead, and by the 11th end had extended this to 9-3. Cocksedge then fought back and tied things up at 12-12. Over the next ten ends Gosper again jumped ahead, mainly via a series of ones, but a three and a two on consecutive ends gave him a 23-15 lead.
Cocksedge the scored a four and a three to reduce the lead to just the single shot. With a one to Gosper and a two to Cocksedge scores were then tied again at 24 apiece. Gosper with a couple of 2two again had a mini break at 28-24.
Cocksedge would not go away and won the next four ends, scoring five shots in the process and grabbing the lead for the first time at 29-28. Gosper then scored one to tie things up at 29-29. Both players were within reach of the trophy, but it was Gosper who came to the fore, scoring the necessary two to record a 31-29 win.
In an all Tuncurry Beach match in president's reserve Neville Brymer 31 defeated Jarrod Small 29 in the first semi and in the second semi Robert Piper (Taree West) defeated Neil Pascoe (Bulahdelah) 16.
In another exhilarating final went right to the wire. There was hardly a struck match between these two, and both players held the lead at times during the course of the match.
Early on scores were tied at 4-4, 5-5 and 7-7 before Brymer snuck out to a 13-8 lead. Piper, not to be outdone, stormed back and again scores were tied at 14-14, and then again at 16-16.
This was proving to be an enthralling contest, no player was prepared to give an inch. Brymer then scored a three, two and a one to skip away to a handy 22-17 lead. Piper could not let this lead extend any further, and he didn't. He smashed his way back to the lead with scores of three, two, four and one on consecutive ends to grab a 27-22 lead. A two to Brymer, followed by a one to Piper and a four to Brymer, and the score was 28-28.
Piper then scored a two and he was on the very cusp of a win. Brymer hit back with two ones of his own to tie everything up at 30-30. A mistake now and the game was gone for either player. A single shot was all it took, and Piper scored it, to be the 2020 champion.
Saturday also saw the start of the senior (over 60) singles.
At the conclusion of play on Sunday it's down to the last four. The semi-finals and final will be at Forster next Saturday October 24. The games will be a match up between Taree West and Tuncurry Beach with both clubs having a player in each. The first semi will see Tony Hinton (Taree West) against Noel James (Tuncurry Beach). In the second semi Ross Logan (Tuncurry Beach) will play Errol Ruprecht (Taree West).
