The current branch memberships totals 94 with a warm welcome to a new member at the September meeting.
A number of important anniversaries had to be abandoned including Vietnam Veterans Day and 70th anniversary of the end of World War II along with the end of the Malayan Conflicts. This was disappointing for servicemen and families who wished to remember loved ones and friends who had served.
It had been brought to the sub-branch's notice of the placement of a time capsule in 1922 in the construction of the then newly erected Wingham Memorial Town Hall.
Thanks to Manning Valley Historical Society and sub-branch members' investigations, the likely location of its resting place has been determined, but there is still a little while off until its re-opening date, and a number of processes to be gone through before being able to extract it.
This will be an important event to the community and more importantly to the Wingham RSL Sub-branch.
The Wingham Memorial Town Hall stands as a proud legacy to all involved in conflicts to protect our Nation and those who fought for its erection.
Remembrance Day, November 11, will see a smaller commemorative service this year. A couple of dates have been allocated at Wingham Plaza namely Friday, October 30 and Thursday, November 5 when sub-branch members will be selling poppies and tokens to help raise funds for the care of veterans across all the services.
Wingham Veterans Advocacy teams continue to operate from the Wingham Courthouse-now-community centre, having moved from a small office to the larger courtroom which has helped greatly due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
The team successfully applied for a BEST(Building Excellence in Support and Training) grant and although less than asked for, is very much appreciated and will likely go towards a new data collection process.
Good news for the seniors in our community with the return of the Wingham RSL Day Club after the COVID 19 shut down. The club will at this time meet fortnightly on a Monday at the Wingham Services Club, Bent Street, Wingham giving our most senior citizens companionship and fun in a friendly atmosphere.
On Friday evening, September 11, Wingham RSL Sub-branch secretary Leonie Gilford accepted a donation from Wingham Services Club president Harry Rider as part of the club's Community Grant program and this will be used to further the work of the sub-branch.
