MidCoast Environment Group (MEG) has written to MidCoast councillors to raise awareness of a World Wildlife Fund report that found a "71 per cent decline in koala numbers across northern NSW bushfire-affected areas".

The group has urged MidCoast Council to devise a "greening strategy" and its members want to be involved.
"If (councillors) understand how seriously the loss of habitat affects our native species, please do your best to devise a 'greening strategy' which will alleviate - and hopefully stem - this loss," Ariel Johnson from MEG wrote.
"Our group relies on you to take a stand against destructive development and land clearing and to preserve and cherish our unique and wonderful natural environment.
"The economy of this area depends on careful management of all our assets - not just using them for temporary gain and removing all 'inconvenient' vegetation.
"Please bring groups like ours into a consultative process as soon as possible - don't just retreat into closed and undemocratic prevarications like 'workshops' that the public can't take part in.
"We want to trust that you will do the right thing as stewards of our future and the future of our land. Please don't let us - and our koalas - down."
