It was the era when Taree had two teams in the Group Three Rugby League competition and there are shots taken by Times photographer Robert Simpson from the opening round clash between Taree United and Taree Old Bar. United, captain-coached by Kevin Hardy, comfortably beat the Bob Carnegie captain-coached Taree Old Bar.
Leading Australian golfer Billy Dunk's appearance in the 1973 Taree Pro Am created enormous interest in the event.
Dunk was one of the highest profile golfers in the land back then and he was followed by huge galleries as he plied his trade on the Taree course. Other sports featured include Chatham High School's rowing squad, archery, cricket and sailing.
Visit the Manning River Times website at 6pm every Wednesday to view the latest gallery in the series.
