The report to the councillors included communication from the Taree and District Eisteddfod Society, detailing the financial implications of cancelling the 2020 eisteddfod due to COVID-19 public health orders and a recommended response.
The 2020 Taree Eisteddfod had been approved for $9900 in event sponsorship from council, in recognition of the social, cultural and economic benefits of the eisteddfod.
To receive event sponsorship, event organisers are required to deliver a number of agreed outcomes including but not limited to acknowledging the support provided by council.
As a result of the cancellation of the 2020 eisteddfod due to COVID-19 public health order restrictions, the Eisteddfod Society was unable to deliver on the agreed outcomes.
Prior to the COVID-19 public health orders being put in place, the committee was well progressed with plans for the 2020 event including undertaking steps required to deliver on the agreed sponsorship outcomes.
The planning actions undertaken resulted in costs being incurred by the Eisteddfod Society that without financial support of council and other sponsors, the financial position of the Eisteddfod Society would place future Taree and District Eisteddfods in jeopardy.
