Just five months out from the annual show and no indication of when social distancing and mass gathering restrictions will be lifted, the show committee was left with no choice this week but to cancel the event.
Taree Show Society president Jane Davis said the committee was devastated by the decision but it was left with no choice.
"We're devastated right across the board," Ms Davis said.
"It's unfortunate given the current situation but we thought it was best to cancel it now. Our main priority is the health and safety of the community, exhibitors and organisers."
It's not just the committee disheartened by the news.
"It impacts the agricultural, horticultural and art exhibitors, the cattle breeders, who would be preparing right now, horse sections and the showgirl competition so it's not just on a small spectrum," Ms Davis said.
The early call on the show is considered positive given the amount of preparation time needed to put it together.
"It can take eight months to put it together but we do start planning about 12 months prior and work on the finer points closer to the show," Ms Davis explained.
The show committee remains focused on growing the relationship between the community and the showground.
"We want to bring the showground to the community and have the community come to the showground," Ms Davis said.
Ms Davis was unsure if the show had ever been cancelled in its 142 year existence.
The virus continues to wreak havoc on the agricultural industry and show societies across Australia.
