The students and staff have embraced these changes, introduced due to coronavirus restrictions, and adapted well to new ways of teaching and communicating.

Students have been given work packs with everything they need to work at home from maths and literacy to arts and crafts.

The staff members are phoning all students to check in and having online Zoom classrooms regularly.

"The students are adjusting well to this form of learning" said principal Michelle Wilson.

"It's been a big change for everyone but I'm really proud of how my staff has stepped up to the challenge of keeping our students engaged, and learning new methods of teaching".

Years 3 to 6 teacher, Nicole Sneddon, has found her students have transitioned really well.

"My kids are very computer literate and are enjoying their online learning. It is quite different talking to them through Zoom sessions, but we're all getting used to it now."

Janine Stephen, the K to 2 teacher, initially found the process overwhelming.

"I wondered how I was going to manage an infants classroom online however, once we got started, it all came together".

Janine credits the parents with doing a wonderful job at home.

"We've all had to learn about online classrooms together; the students, the parents and me."

The teaching staff aren't the only ones adjusting to the changes with Learning Support Officer, Mel Bingham and Administrative Manager, Kayleen McCowan finding the quiet school very different.

"We're both missing the students" said Mel. "We're really looking forward to the day when everyone can come back to school."

While the school remains open for the children of essential workers, Mrs Wilson has found that all families are choosing to take the advice of the NSW Premier and keep their children at home.

"All of the staff at Mitchells Island Public School continue to work hard to provide quality education to our students," she said.
