The Mid Coast Drag Racing Association (MCDRA) president recently won the Group A section of the Tamworth Drag Racing Association 1/8 mile event at Gunnedah Airport.
This is considered a top event for the Tamworth/Gunnedah and northwest NSW drag racing scene.
Nathan secured the win against Dubbo's Rob Gardner in the final.
Competing in a Holden Gemini Coupe, Nathan had the smallest break-out and was therefore awarded the win. He clocked in at 5.971 seconds and reached 192 km/h.
"It was very fun and exciting," Nathan said.
The time was faster than what Nathan nominated. It was also the quickest from the 76 car field across the weekend.
The groups were determined through competitor performance in practice sessions.
"The quickest cars go in group A, the next lot are in group B and so on," Nathan explained.
"Cars like mine, which are fully dedicated drag cars, and some very fast street cars compete in group A."
The final 16 competed in an elimination style tournament. Nathan's daughter's partner Dylan Brown (group C) and cousin Rhys Cooper (group A) also competed and reached the semi-finals.
"It could have been an all Cooper final," Nathan smiled.
Several MCDRA members attended along with Nathan's family.
With racing across the State indefinitely suspended, Nathan could be 'one and done' for the year.
He was looking to add to his impressive start in Sydney this weekend but the coronavirus pandemic has halted all events.
So for now, Nathan's car is locked away.
"It's disappointing but I understand it has to happen," he said.
Nathan said the Tamworth association helped launch drag racing locally.
"They had a big part in getting drag racing going in Taree," Nathan said.
The association's debut at Taree Airport last October was an overwhelming success.
"We hope to have an event this year but we'll wait and see (outcome of coronavirus)," Nathan said.
"We'll work towards our timeframe but it could end up being early next year."
The next event looks to be bigger and better.
"Last year was really hot so we'll need to sort out a few things to make it smoother and better for people," Nathan said.
Drag racing fans are encouraged to follow MCDRA on Facebook for updates on the next event.
