Last weekend I officially opened the 83rd Comboyne Show. It was great to walk through muddy puddles at the showground and see the valley recovering from the drought. I acknowledge president Rodney Fisher, secretary Donna Lance, show coordinator Marion Lawrence, and all the team who work so hard to bring the show together.
There was a great array of local produce, art, crafts, baked goods and flowers. Congratulations to this year's most successful exhibitors: Joy Hurrell - Art; Kay White - Produce; Georgia Corrigan - Junior Art; Aiden Debreceny - Junior Produce.
Local sport champions
With the Tokyo Olympics months away, I want to ensure our local sporting champions are given every opportunity to follow their dreams. This week I was pleased to announce grants for:
- 15-year-old Bayden Smith of Bonny Hills, who is a dedicated hockey player. He trains up to five days a week as well as playing in championships, umpiring, coaching and mentoring players. He was the junior club person of the year in 2019.
- 14-year-old Zoe Bulmerof of Telegraph Point. She has played futsal and football since she was five years old. Zoe won premiership, championship and state competitions in 2018, while playing in the Women's Premier League under-14 side.
Coronavirus
Based on expert advice, the Australian government has activated the Coronavirus Emergency Response Plan. The government will increase funding for a joint COVID-19 public health response, with 50/50 cost sharing and $100m immediate funding from the Commonwealth across all states and territories upon agreement.
We have also taken further action to safeguard the health of Australians by extending travel bans to South Korea, in addition to China and Iran, and implementing enhanced health screening and temperature testing for arrivals from Italy. As the chief medical officer has confirmed, Australia is among the best prepared countries in the world to respond to the virus.
