The 'One of the Kids' workshop will run on Thursday, March 19 from 9am to 3pm at Club Taree.
Topics covered in the workshop will include:
- What does genuine inclusion look like?
- What should a good life look like?
- How to build a vision that leads to a good life?
- Strategies and skills to navigate the education system and understand your rights to achieve genuine inclusion.
The workshop includes a talk by a guest speaker, Mrs Annette Bush, a parent from Nambucca Heads, whose son Jacob has an intellectual disability. Mrs Bush will be sharing Jacob's experience attending a regular classroom from kindergarten right through to year 12.
"We wanted Jacob to have the same learning opportunities that his brothers and sisters had at school," Mrs Bush said.
"The education space is such a rich place for learning not just academically but also socially. We felt this was where Jacob would learn and thrive with his own peer group in the regular class."
The workshop is being held by Family Advocacy, an advocacy organisation that supports families across NSW to promote and defend the rights and interests of people with developmental disability.
Free refreshments will be available on arrival and lunch and resource pack provided.
