It has been reported that the contract is worth $600,000 for this season with an option the club's way for a second year worth $800,000. He will front a media conference with coach Wayne Bennett this afternoon, ending a drawn out saga surrounding his future.
Mitchell was a member of the Sydney Roosters' premiership sides of 2018/19 and has also represented NSW and Australia. The 22-year-old centre cut ties with the Roosters despite having a year left on a contract.
The Roosters offered Mitchell a two-year $1.6 million extension on his current deal. Mitchell also had negotiations with Wests Tigers, North Queensland and Gold Coast - the Tigers reportedly offering him $4 million over four years.
Mitchell has spent much of the off-season in Taree. With his father, Matt, Mitchell met with Souths co-owner Russell Crowe at the actor's farm near Coffs Harbour last week.
He started playing rugby league with Taree Red Rovers in the Group Three juniors and had a season with Taree City's under 18s before going into the Roosters' system.
He played 96 NRL games with the Roosters after making his debut in 2016. He has scored 65 tries and was the leading points scorer in the competition last year.
