Professor of climate change and earth sciences at the University of NSW, Chris Turney will speak at a 'Climate Emergency: Explained' forum in Taree on Wednesday, December 18.

Extinction Rebellion Mid Coast is hosting the forum at the Uniting Church Hall, Taree, starting at 6.30pm.
Prof Turney was to speak at Taree last month but the event was postponed because of the bushfires which destroyed more than 100 homes.
MidCoast Council recently joined the growing list of local Australian councils to have declared a climate emergency.
Prof Turney will present a talk on the science around the climate and ecological emergency and also be available for a Q&A session.
Speaking on the evening will also be a representative from Mid Coast Council to discuss their continuing work on the council's Climate Change Policy and Action Plan.
Prof Turney is director of the Chronos 14Carbon-Cycle Facility at the University of New South Wales. With over 200 scientific papers on environmental change, Chris has received numerous awards for his research including the first International Union for Quaternary Science's Sir Nicholas Shackleton Medal for pioneering research into climate change (2007), the Geological Society of London's Bigsby Medal (2009) and the Australian Academy of Science's Frederick White prize (2014).
Chris was a founding director and is now science advisor to CarbonScape (carbonscape.com), a carbon refining company that has developed microwave technology to fix carbon from the atmosphere and make a host of green bi-products, including activated carbon, graphite, sustainable fuels and biochar.
He has written four books to critical acclaim - Shackled: How a Scientific Expedition to Antarctica Became a Fight for Survival, 1912: The Year the World Discovered Antarctica; Bones, Rocks and Stars: The Science of When Things Happened; and Ice, Mud and Blood: The Science of When Things Happened.
