This Black Head Road intersection has become quite a black spot for motor vehicle accidents this past few years.
I was returning from working at Coopernook Thursday afternoon (October 10), only to be stopped due to this vehicle accident. The police had not yet arrived as the line of traffic grew longer. They were, however, on their way.
We've used the Lakes Way many times over the years as part of our long distance events, running the Forster to Taree, Bridge to Bridge 33km endurance.
I know this stretch of road like the back of my hand. Some, it would seem, do not!
I've seen several serious accidents at this intersection over the years and twice as many close calls, both while driving and running through the intersection. It appears people attempting to turn right from Black Head Road onto the Lakes Way or right off the Lakes Way onto Black Head Road are the ones getting caught up in these accidents.
I'm not sure exactly what the answer is at this black spot intersection, but I'm sure dropping the speed limit at this point may be one answer to reducing accidents.
Although there were several emergency vehicles in attendance by the time I'd crawled slowly through the accident spot, I don't think there were any serious injuries. At least, I hope not!
