He won the vote against Cr Kathryn Bell seven to four.
Cr Claire Pontin was elected the deputy mayor, winning the vote 8-3 ahead of Cr Bell.
The election was held at the start of today, Wednesday's, MidCoast Council meeting at the Forster chambers.
Cr West has served two years as mayor and will now serve a final year ahead of next September's local government elections. Generally the term of mayor is two years, while the deputy position is voted on annually.
Cr West has been in local government for 26 years. In an interview ahead of today's vote he said: "From my point of view, apart from being a police officer, (being mayor) is the best job in the world because you're part of a team."
