Following the community meeting at Wingham Bowling Club on Sunday, August 11 regarding MidCoast Council's Monument Risk Assessment Program, council issued the following statement on Monday, August 12.

MidCoast Council has committed to working with families to ensure headstones damaged at The Bight Cemetery Wingham are repaired.
As part of this process, council will publish a map of the cemetery indicating those monuments which have been laid down. Photos of each monument will also be made available to assist family members identify impacted headstones.
Council will now develop an action plan for the restoration of the headstones that were incorrectly laid down during the implementation of a monument risk assessment program.
Council has already undertaken to repair 47 of the 59 affected headstones, and has not ruled out repairing the remaining 12 subject to a more detailed assessment.

This program has now been suspended indefinitely and no further work will be undertaken at any of the region's cemeteries until the program is completely reviewed and the community is consulted.
A separate action plan will be also developed in relation to the overall risk assessment program.
Once finalised, the plans will be communicated to the community.
