The first of the workshops is being presented by MidCoast Stories and is about using Taree Council rate books to research family history and property.

Participants will learn how to use rate and valuation books from 1885 to 1950, to trace property ownership, date building construction and track down family history such as occupations and addresses.

This workshop will take place on Thursday, August 15 from 2pm to 3.30pm at Taree Library.

The second workshop will be presented by the Manning Wallamba Family History Society and is all about the stories behind our own old family photos.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a family photo and share their family story with the group from 1.30pm to 3pm on Tuesday, August 20.

Those taking part will also have the chance to explore the huge range of resources available to help people on their family history research journey.

Family history and genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies around the world and more than 250,000 Australian are members of family history related organisations.

"We've all got history and it's amazing what you can uncover once you start to dig a little," said Chris Jones, Manager of MidCoast Council Libraries.

"It's one of those things where you never know what you might find out and it's just so interesting. We hope lots of people will come along to these great workshops and be guided by the experts to get the most out of the experience."
