Retired train driver Fred Able booked a same-day round trip from Kempsey to Taree on the XPT regional train to attend a 'Christmas in July' lunch hosted by Taree and District Railway Retirement Club.

Mr Able, 98, was the oldest person to attend the event at Taree Railway Institute Bowling Club on July 24 which began around 11.30am and ended around 2pm.
Club spokesman, Barry Seghers said Mr Able was one of around 80 people who travelled for the annual 'Christmas in July' event, and added that attendance numbers were up by about 10 people on the 2018 event. He said people travelled from as far north as Grafton, from the Hunter Valley in the south "and everywhere in between" to attend.
Mr Seghers said Mr Able "had a very good day and enjoyed coming down to Taree on the train."
Taree and District Railway Retirement Club is the second oldest railway retirement club that celebrates members who have retired in the past 12 months. The oldest railway retirement club is Enfield in Sydney which started in 1946.
