Richie's grandfather, Jean Benaud, lived in Taree and captained many ships that sailed on the Manning River.
Jean was born in France and arrived in the Manning Valley in the mid 1800s.
A widower, Jean remarried in 1858 to Caroline Powell, the daughter of the first ever maritime pilot on the Manning River, Richard Powell.
On July 1 1866, Jean was riding his horse on Pulteney Street when tragedy struck.
Near where the Civic Theatre used to be, Jean's horse stepped into a pothole. As the horse jolted, Jean was thrown forward and landed head first on the ground.
He died from his injuries two days later.
