Garden co-ordinator Bree Katsamangos recently sounded the call to the community to help fill the Street Library with a selection of children's books, teen reads and adult books.
"Do you have some great reads on your shelf that are gathering dust? Set them free!" Bree said.
The Taree Community Garden Street Library is the first of many to be set up throughout the Manning Valley. The community recently celebrated its installation in the garden as part of the Paint the Town REaD initiative. Donated by Mission Australia, the Street Library encourages a whole community approach to support early literacy by people taking, giving and sharing books.
Painted bright fire engine red by Chloe Hargreaves of Elusive Art, the colourful design pays homage to the garden surroundings with butterflies, snails, insects, clouds and a rainbow.
Bree invites people to drop book donations to the Misson Australia office which is located opposite MidCoast Council's administration office in Pulteney Street. Donations are to be marked to the attention of 'Bree'.
Taree Community Garden is also hosting a fundraising screening of the movie '2040' at Fay's Twin Cinema.
Bree is urging people to buy tickets for the screening that is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31 at 6.30pm.
According to the film's website, 2040 is about award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film) embarking on a journey to explore what the future could look like by the year 2040 if people simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.
Bree said the film was a source of hope and encouragement and shows that change is possible and achievable.
"Our garden aims to be a place of connection but also community education, sharing ideas about how to live more sustainably," Bree said.
"As the messaging around climate change and its impacts accelerate and the need for action becomes more urgent, hope seems a hard thing to find.
"This film explores the resources and innovations we have available to us now that can make real and positive impacts in our community and across the world."
People wanting to attend can purchase their tickets on the Fan Force website. Tickets are $25 each, with $2 from the sale of each ticket going to Taree Community Garden.
