Dawn and Peter Calvin decided to install a television at the front of their store, Calvin's Electrical, in the late 1950s.
With a 40 feet antenna standing on top of the roof, the television produced a black and white (and sometimes snowy) picture transmitted from Sydney stations.
"It (the television) was in a big timber frame and the picture was only 15 inches square," Dawn explained.
To the benefit of the public, speakers were placed outside of the store.
The complete cinematic experience consistently drew a crowd to the front of the store during the day and night.
The picture quality was improved once the transmission was taken from Newcastle.
