On October 16, 2018, Taree police located three original World War I medals in the possession of a 31-year-old man after his arrest for unrelated offences.
The medals, known as the Great War Trio, were the 1914-15 Star, British medal and Victory medal.
Police contacted the administrator of the Medals Gone Missing website to begin a search for the owner.
Australian War Memorial records showed the medals belonged to Raymond Stanley Marriott who left Australia on board HMAT Horota in September 1915. He was 21 at the time.
The medals were reported missing by Mr Marriott in 1955.
Mr Marriott's family was tracked down, with the medals presented to his son Ronald by Ku-ring-gai Police Area Command Chief Inspector David Hogg in Hornsby before Anzac Day.
The Marriott family was thankful for the work of Manning Great Lakes Police District Senior Constable Dave Matthews for tracing the origins of the medals and their safe return.
The man found in possession of the medals was charged with goods in custody suspected of being stolen. He was convicted of the offence in February.
