And for a sneaky $6 million, it could be yours.

That's right, the mysterious Wallis Island mansion, the Chateau Le Marais, will be up for auction on June 6, if it doesn't get scooped up sooner.

Boasting its own helipad, a 1.5km beach, five bedrooms, six bathrooms and lavish 18^th century French-style design, the place has been dubbed by real estate agent Ray White as Australia's finest holiday home.

Located on 257 acres, the property is only accessible by sea or air and is completely self-sufficient.

Selling agent Mark Clarke believes these characteristics, along with some of its more unique features, have contributed to the interest already being shown in the property.

"It's very private, very secluded," he said.

"It has its own botanical gardens."

It also has its own colourful history, although not of the crime lord/artist recluse variety.

Envisaged as a dream home by 18^th century French antiques dealer Andre Finks and his wife Cecile, construction on Le Marais began in 1996, with Finks sparing no expense in setting up his island estate, including employing master European craftsmen for the sculptures and stonemasonry.

However, when the global financial crisis hit and Finks' business was adversely affected, the dream started to crumble.

Unable to make repayments on the property, Finks unsuccessfully tried to sell the property for a whopping $20 million before ANZ took control of the place in 2014.

Bought by a new owner approximately three years ago, the two-storey mansion has since undergone extensive renovations and was only listed for sale again in the past few weeks.
