Why do we hold onto objects? How do objects and memories connect? What happens when a treasured object breaks and how can we repair it?
Object Therapy is an exhibition and project by Hotel Hotel that explores creative transformation and notions of value and repair.
it officially opens at the Taree gallery on Friday April 26.
The works include those by noted Australian and international designers and artists who have repaired, and sometimes completely re-imagined, 29 broken objects sourced from the Canberra community.
By transforming these loved but broken objects through creative repair, Object Therapy showcases innovative design solutions while exploring the attachments we form with objects.
Items of furniture, ceramics, household appliances, textiles, jewellery, sentimental objects and even one human were all treated and re-imagined, giving them new value.
Object Therapy is rich with stories. The stories of the owners and what the broken objects mean to them; the stories of the designers and their process to repair the objects; and the broader story that is relevant to all of us in terms of how we value objects and how we can live in a better world simply by reusing what we have rather than throwing away and replacing with something new, said Lisa Cahill, director ADC.
Manning Regional Art Gallery has planned a series of workshops and events during April and May, including school workshops, and a 'Repair Fair' for members of the public to meet designer/repairers to find out how broken objects can be brought back to life.
A launch for Object Therapy will take place on Friday April 26, from 6pm, and tickets are $10 ($7 for art gallery members). Local artist, Billy James Crellin's exhibition Yank, Squeeze, Bow will also be launched during this event.
The exhibition continues until June 2. The gallery, located in Macquarie Street, Taree, is open 10am to 4pm Wednesdays to Saturdays and 1pm to 4pm Sundays. It is closed over the Easter long weekend and Anzac Day.
