Mr Stanton attended the meeting and expressed the view that there was a need for a men's shelter in Taree. He said there were welfare organisations in Taree but none to specifically look after homeless men and to find them accommodation.
According to the club, Mr Stanton said there was nowhere for them to go, to find rest, food, and clean up, so as to be able to look for some type of work.
"What do we need to get a shelter?" Mr Stanton asked. "Do we have a plan?"
"One of the problems of being homeless is that they are perceived as being undesirable, whereas many are homeless through no fault of their own."
Mr Stanton suggested the Rotary Club of Taree could work with other Rotary clubs and welfare organisations to obtain grants to locate a shelter in Taree. He suggested that a working group be set up to find ways to solve the problem of homeless men in the community.
