The annual Viking Challenge six-a-side event was held over the weekend with Great Lakes United Football Club hosting 159 teams at the North Tuncurry Sports Complex.
Seventy six open men’s teams, 28 over-35 men's, 40 open women’s teams and 15 over-30 women’s sides all came together for two days of football.
Almost 250 matches were played under slight cloud cover on Saturday.
This made for tough matches and tired players.
Saturday's matches divided the teams into various divisions for the following day.
The normal festive night was held at the venue of major sponsor the Lakeside Tavern and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, but did lead to some sore heads the next morning.
Sunday began with an earlier start and a return to a past torment of making the men’s A Division the first match of the day.
Games across all divisions progressed, despite some hiccups, and slowly the numbers whittled down to the finalists.
The women’s A Division final was between last year's champions Why Nots and a rep futsal side from Sydney, the Eagles.
The match was intense and end to end.
The Eagles gradually became more dominant and in the end proved too strong, taking the title of Viking Challenge Champions for 2019.
The men’s final in A Division was a case of visiting team, Gump’s 3.0, who have been coming for a number of years and who progressed very strongly through the competition, finding themselves on the wrong end of the score sheet against the appropriately labelled Sydney Dream Team.
The Gump’s played strongly but had few answers for a team that dominated possession 80/20.
Although it took time for the Dream Team to score, once they did, they kept piling the pressure on and despite a spirited flurry of attacks, the Gump’s couldn’t breach their defence.
The large crowd in the grandstand thoroughly enjoyed both games and showed their appreciation for a great display of football skill.
Almost 400 games were played over the weekend, with tonnes of sausage and rissole sandwiches eaten and many miles run.
Many volunteers hours went into the event and also the assistance from MidCoast Council was much appreciated.
We move now to 2020!
