Described by some as a 'mini tornado', the storm hit mid afternoon on Saturday, March 9.

Wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour were recorded at the height of the storm while 16 millimetres of rain was dumped in half an hour.

Not to mention frequent lightning strikes, loud thunder and hail prompting residents to run for cover.

As the storm rolled on, trees were torn to shreds, roofs were damaged and sheds were destroyed.

Emergency services were put into overdrive in the aftermath.

The State Emergency Service was put in to motion as soon as the storm subsided, with the Taree crew welcoming assistance from Wingham, Forster Pacific Palms, Camden Haven, and Maitland crews across the weekend.

One of the worst hit was the Manning River Rowing Club.

Most of the building's roof was ripped off, with the upstairs section severely damaged.

With the Central Districts Rowing Regatta taking place at the same time, some boats caught up in the drama were virtually written off. 

Manning River Aero Club also suffered damage, with the roof of the hanger taking flight.

The roof flew a few hundred metres away and landed intact.

As power lines fell, more than 4000 residents were plunged into darkness.

As dark skies loomed overhead in the aftermath of the storm, severe thunderstorms were predicted for the area several hours later.

The warning was later cancelled with heavy rain experienced instead.

MidCoast Council crews joined in the clean-up on Monday, March 11. Council is in the process of assessing the damage to facilities.

Crews attended Dawson River Cemetery to remove debris that blocked the entrance.

With some areas still cleaning up from a storm in December 2018, it will take some time for a reprieve.

Conditions will be partly cloudy and hot until Wednesday.

Rainfall between four and eight millimetres is expected for the middle of the week.

It is predicted to continue until Sunday.
