Paint, Cloth and Clay showcases the work of  Ali Haigh and Peter and Yvette Hugill.

The exhibition features the mediums of paint, print and ceramics, as each artist draws inspiration from their local surrounds to create works that are colourful and contemporary.

This is the first time Ali's work has been shown in Gloucester, while the Hugill's previously exhibited at the gallery in 2015.

Ali’s prints and fabric designs are inspired by the bold, repetitive forms and patterns she finds in nature.

The images she captures are then translated onto fabrics and domestic objects such as the humble timber chopping board.

“It is important to know the story behind the work, as each image in the exhibition is based on objects I find or photograph on my daily walks along the shoreline at Old Bar or from places I have visited," said Ali.

"Two of the key textile groupings in this exhibition feature the skeletal patterns of a box fish and holey rocks that were photographed in Newcastle, and when placed in repeat take on a lace-like appearance.”

Yvette brings her rural landscape inspired paintings incorporating various styles; fine pastel lines on paper inspired by sunlight and shadows, acrylics to create bold stylised landscapes reflecting the shapes of the trees almost as symbols of nature and oils used both traditionally and contemporary in technique.

"Most of the work that’s in it are local landscapes (some from the Gloucester region), and there’s a couple of still lifes," Yvette said.

Peter contributes his handcrafted earthy domestic pottery as well as purely decorative pieces, using both stoneware and porcelain; some carrying sgraffito decoration (a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour or in slip on ceramics before firing), while the stoneware may have unusually coloured bright glaze or subtle earthy tones, in either case the shapes are elegant and strong.

Yvette and Peter enjoyed their first exhibition at the Gloucester Gallery, where, they say, 50 per cent of the people that came through the gallery while they were manning it were overseas tourists. 

“One of my paintings, someone came in and they took it to Finland. I had to take it out of the frame and put it in a tube!” Yvette said.

Paint Cloth and Clay will be on exhibition at the Gloucester Gallery from February 28 to March 24. The official opening is at 2pm on Saturday, March 2.
