McCartney tweaked his hamstring bowling in the game against Wauchope on February 2 and hasn't played since. United skipper Ricky Campbell isn't expecting McCartney to return for at least two more weeks.
McCartney had hamstring problems last year.
"But this is his other leg,'' Campbell explained.
McCartney's return could coincide with the start of the second grade semi-finals and Campbell said this would give him the opportunity to test the injury before coming back into the premier league side.
United, sitting in third spot, will meets equal second placed Port Pirates tomorrow at Port Macquarie. Should United win and Wingham down Wauchope RSL, the other side in second place, United would jump to second place. However, Campbell said a loss could narrow the gap between his side and the others vying for a top four berth.
United go into the match in good nick following a commanding nine wicket win over Macquarie last start. The United attack clicked, dismissing Macquarie for just 65 before Ryan Yates and Matt Collier, who is back in form, quickly wiped off the deficit.
"Getting second spot is our immediate aim,'' Campbell said.
