In the first zone 11 lawn bowls championship of the year teams from Tuncurry Beach had a clean sweep, winning all three finals.

On Saturday there was the semi and final of the president’s reserve and senior events, and in the open we had the quarter and semifinal with the final played on Sunday.
In the semifinals of the president’s reserve J.Carr (Wingham) defeated D.Fitzgerald (Palms) 22-17 and S.Holohan (Tuncurry Beach) defeated A. Single (Palms) 31-12.
So, in the final we had Mick Gluyas, Frank Edwards and Steve Holohan (TB) vs J. Nicholson, B. Waters and J.Carr (W).
Steve’s team scored a four on the first end and won five of the first six ends to establish an 11-2 lead.
J’s team did score a four on the ninth end to get them back to within five shots, but they were unable to close the gap, and in fact the gap only widened.
Steve’s team scored a five and two on consecutive ends to open up a 20-8 lead. J’s team did fight hard over the closing ends but were unable to make any inroads with the final score being 30-17.
In the first semi of the senior’s E. Ruprecht (Taree West) played V. McGlashan (Forster).
This was a hard fought game with the scores tied at 21-21 with 2 ends to play.
The West guys then closed out with a three and one to win 25-21.
In the other semi R. Johnston (Tuncurry Beach) defeated R. Northam (Forster) 28-13.
In the final the teams were Noel (Toby) Murphy, Noel James and Rex Johnston (Tb) vs Bob O’Mahoney, Mal Drury and Errol Ruprecht (TW).
This started out as a bit of a see-sawing game with Errol’s team leading 8-5 after six ends, but then Rex’s team won six of the next seven ends to open up a 16-9 lead.
Errol’s team scored a five on end 16 and only trailed by 17-16.
Rex’s team then won the next four ends to again open up a lead of 22-16. Errol’s team then won three in a row and the score was 22-21 with two to play.
Rex scored a one to lead by two playing the last.
Rex was holding two and Errol had the last bowl with a chance to draw the game, but failed, with Rex’s team winning 25-21.
The semifinal in the open had J. Aurisch (Tuncurry Beach) defeat A. Hinton (Taree West) 26-14, and P. Lindfield (Leagues) defeat P. Davis (Sporties) 28-14.
The teams in the final were Robert Austin, Warren Cocksedge and Phil Lindfield (L) against Kris Murtagh, Steve Newman and Jason Aurisch (TB).
Phil’s team flew out of the blocks and had a handy 7-1 lead after four ends. Jason’s team then set about chipping away at the lead and won seven of the next nine ends to have a 12-9 lead.
Phil’s team then scored a couple of singles and the score was 12-11. Jason’s team then won the next six ends and had established a winning 22-11 lead.
Phil’s team tried hard to close the gap and won the next three ends, but were only scoring singles.
The final score had Jason’s team winning 22-14.
