Marylyn was awarded the Taree Young Citizen of the Year on Australia Day.
“Being awarded Young Citizen of the Year was a great honour,” Marylyn said.
“I never imagined I would ever be nominated and to win was a great surprise.”
Marylyn holds the award in high regard as a means of recognising the hard working young people in the community.
“I think it is an amazing award. It not only helps youth aspire to help the community, but it also showcases the hard work youth do in the community on a local platform,” Marylyn said.
The ceremony brought back happy memories for the Zimbabwean-Australian dual national.
“It was a tearful moment as the new Australian citizens were awarded as I was in the same position as them 11 years ago and know the amazing life that lays ahead in the Manning,” Marylyn said.
She has a busy 2019 in store, balancing her volunteer work while completing a law and social sciences double degree with a major in politics and international relations at University of Newcastle.
“I will still be working with youth in the Taree with MidCoast Council, the YMCA and the Rotary Club of Taree through the Manning Youth Action and Interact Team, which has received as $29,000 grant to continue its philanthropic efforts in the community,” Marylyn said.
“I will also be volunteering with YWCA NSW for the Youth Frontiers Mentoring Program.”
“I will have the opportunity to teach and guide this year’s youth parliamentarians through their journey,” Marylyn said.
Marylyn encouraged all youth of the Manning to get involved with community events.
“We are lucky to have many youth service providers in the community who works tirelessly to help our youth be involved in the community,” Marylyn said.
“Our youth are the future, so it’s important we start learning about and getting involved in our community. This way, we will know how to better serve it when the time comes.”
Georgia Hudson was the other nominee for the Young Citizen of the Year award.
