The community has until January 14, 2019 tell council how they feel about the policy, which is designed to support the sustainable operation of regular markets on public land.
Markets contributing socially, culturally and economically to the region and the new policy offers a consistent approach to managing regular these events.
The policy outlines requirements around the use of public spaces and aims to support market organisers to run successful events for the benefit of the whole community.

It applies to all regular markets taking place throughout the MidCoast region on council owned land, or council controlled public land – including farmers markets.
Council has listened to concerns within the community regarding the operation of markets outside of weekends and public holidays and the draft policy emphasises that “applications to vary these days of operation will be assessed on demonstrated community benefit.”
Council will be working with market organisers to bring about positive outcomes for the community.
The public exhibition period has been extended to ensure the community has ample opportunity to provide feedback.
Not included in the draft policy are festivals, ‘one-off’ community based events and fundraisers such as annual markets and fetes, and markets taking place on private land. These may, however, be subject to a separate approval process such as a special event or development application.
