This week the year four student had his long hair lopped in front of his whole school, St Joseph’s Primary at Taree, to donate to Hair with Heart.
Hair With Heart is a Variety Children’s charity and the hair will be made into wigs for children who have lost their hair because of alopecia or through cancer treatment.
But not only will Flynn’s hair help the charity, he also sought sponsorship from friends and family before facing the scissors and currently he has raised about $300 for Variety.
While his hair will be used to help make wigs for children with a long term medical condition, the funds he has raised will help kids living with disability, chronic illness and disadvantage.
Flynn has had only two hair cuts in the life. The first was when he was six years old in 2015 when he donated his hair to the Princess Charlotte Alopecia Program.
At the time of his first hair cut, his hair was around 30 centimetres long, according to Flynn. It has only taken three years to grow it all back, and then some. This time, his hair reached 37 or 38cm.
“We’ve known people who lost their hair through illness,” Janelle explained.
Although Flynn was feeling a bit sad, he also felt like it was high time to get the chop.
“I felt like my hair was starting to get really long - my fringe was starting to get to the back of my ponytail,” Flynn said.
“It’s not really annoying but it does sometimes get annoying like if you don’t have a hairbrush and you have to tie your hair up or you’re really sweaty, it’s not comfortable.”
Now Flynn has had his hair cut off, he plans growing it long all over again, and once again donating it to charity.
Flynn’s family, his brother Leo, parents Scott and Janelle and grandparents were in the audience at the school to support him.
